ONE: VETERANS RESOURCE HUB AND NEW WEBSITE

Donation protected
ONE, as the provider of  Support, Comradeship, Advocacy and Remembrance (SCAR) for all Irish Veterans, recognises the need to build a more inclusive and diverse organisation. We recognise the unique nature of military service and we want veterans and wider-society to be proud of that service. Greater understanding of the specific needs of all veterans, women and men, young and old, will ensure that the organisation continues to grow and to provide essential services and support to those who have proudly served their country.

ONE has 36 Branches and 3 Area Councils countrywide. ONE is developing 15 Veteran Support Centres nationwide which can be described as a cross between Advice Centres and Men’s / Women’s Sheds.  ONE currently has hostels for homeless veterans in Athlone, Dublin & Letterkenny and we are in the process of developing two further hostels in the south of country, the first of which is a five-bedroom hostel in Cobh in tandem with the Veteran Support Centre there.

Important steps have been taken to assess our current membership profile, looking at the services currently provided to veterans and identifying areas for improvement.  As part of our Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Strategy, we are drawing upon the widest possible set of backgrounds, talents and skills to maximise our veteran support services, adapt our services to the changing needs of our veterans and we intend to take advantage of new opportunities for collaboration and partnerships. The D&I Strategy consists of goals and objectives that will assist us in identifying the barriers to full & equal participation and any opportunities there are to develop specific services. The main objective, following an initial diagnostic, was to create a detailed outcome focused D&I Strategy and implementation plan.

D&I is now an organisational priority and we are embracing it in its most holistic sense; sex, age, ethnicity, gender & sexual orientation. ONE values you and wants you as a member because you are unique and because together, we are stronger. By nurturing different perspectives, we will encourage open dialogue and new ideas, in a trusting and respectful environment, that will enable us to connect with veterans across Ireland.

One important element of building a better, stronger and more inclusive organisation is a fully functional and updated website. This requires investment to ensure that we are building a site that not only services the needs and future needs of our entire veteran community but also provides potential corporate partners with an insight into the impactful work of the organisation. Younger members of ONE and potential members want a resource hub, they want access to training and networking opportunities and they want to foster a sense of community outside of the Defence Forces. We intend to attract partners and donors from across a broad spectrum of sectors, including academia, non-profit and business in order to assist us in achieving our strategic goals. The creation of this new website will allow us to communicate our story and increase ONE’s visibility.

Consequently, we are putting out an appeal for donations to assist us in creating this essential element of our longer-term strategy. We are hoping to raise 2,000 euro through this appeal.

Together, we can influence Irish society to recognise veterans service to the state and celebrate this service. Together, we can influence organisations to engage and collaborate with ONE on veterans programmes and services and most importantly, together we can ensure that every single veteran has the opportunity to reach their own individual potential. https://oneconnect.ie
