My name is Christina, and I’m the founder of Savana Women Health Africa, a Uganda-based nonprofit working to improve the health, dignity and wellbeing of women and girls.
Through our work with girls in schools, we provide reproductive and menstrual health education, counselling and support, and help girls access healthcare when they need it.
But our work has also highlighted a much more basic problem.
Many girls do not have access to safe, private and appropriate toilet facilities at school.
For a girl managing her period, this can make something as ordinary as attending school incredibly difficult. Without a private place to change, wash and manage her menstrual health safely, her dignity, hygiene and experience at school can all be affected.
That is why we are launching One Toilet at a Time.
Our first goal is to raise approximately £1,560 (UGX 7,800,000) to build a dedicated girls’ toilet and handwashing facility at one of the schools we work with in Uganda.
The money raised will help cover the costs of building materials, roofing, doors, ventilation, handwashing facilities, labour and supervision needed to complete the project.
For me, this campaign is about much more than building a toilet.
It is about dignity.
A girl should be able to go to school without worrying about whether she has somewhere safe to manage her period. She should have privacy. She should have access to basic sanitation. And something as fundamental as a toilet should never become another barrier to her education.
Our ambition is to start with one school, complete the first facility and, as Savana grows, continue improving sanitation for girls one toilet at a time.
Where your donation will go:
Savana operates in Uganda, which is not currently supported for direct GoFundMe withdrawals. I am therefore organising this fundraiser from the United Kingdom. Funds raised will be received by me as Savana’s Founder and Executive Director and transferred for use on the project in Uganda.
Funds raised through this fundraiser will be allocated to the One Toilet at a Time project, and we will share updates so donors can follow the progress their support has helped make possible.
Whether you can give £5, £10, £25 or more, every contribution brings us closer to building the first toilet.
And if you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean just as much.
One toilet. One school. Hundreds of girls with greater dignity.
Will you help us build the first one?
