On Sunday morning, July 27, 2025, our sweet dog Katana, a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix was let outside with her doggy siblings like usual. They were only out for a few minutes when we heard one of the dogs howling for our attention. All dogs came right to the door when we called out…but Katana came back covered in blood.

At first, we thought maybe she had gotten into a cactus or tangled with another animal. But when we got a closer look after gently cleaning her up to find the source of blood, she wouldn’t open her eyes, and we noticed unusual spots on her ears. We did our best to rinse her eyes out and saw that right looked much worse than the left.

We took her to the vet, where she had to be sedated for a full evaluation. X-rays revealed the heartbreaking truth: Katana had been shot, likely with a shotgun loaded with birdshot.

Because of this, Katana has suffered serious injuries to both eyes. Her right eye ruptured from the damage and needs to be removed. Her left eye is also injured, and we’re still unsure how much vision she’ll regain. The vet says she will be partially or even fully blind. She will also be living with the shrapnel in her body due to the size it makes it practically impossible to remove all if any from her face and body.

Katana has already been through so much. I rescued her from the streets of Eagle Pass, TX, earlier this year. She was found outside of dollar general digging through trash at just 23lbs.

She’s blossomed into the most playful, loving, and goofy pup who has brought so much joy into our lives. This traumatic experience has changed her world completely, and we want to do everything we can to help her adjust and thrive.

We’ve filed a police report with Maverick County and are hoping justice will be served. In the meantime, we’re asking for help with her medical expenses, surgery, follow-up care, and any changes we need to make at home to support her new way of life.
