Hi, my name is Hussain. I’m 29 years old, and my life changed forever in a matter of seconds. On August 25, 2024, I was simply waiting for my ride home outside a club in Hamilton. An argument broke out nearby—and before I could even react, shots were fired. I was hit in the back. The bullet shattered my spine. I remember lying on the ground, unable to move, thinking about my family… wondering if I was going to die right there. I couldn’t feel my legs. The pain was unbearable, and everything happened so fast. I was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital for emergency surgery. When I woke up, doctors told me something I’ll never forget: “You may never walk again.” Since that day, my life has been a constant battle. I went from being independent, working a job I loved, and living a normal life—to needing help for basic things like getting out of bed. I’ve fought hard through rehab, and I’ve made some progress. But I still have permanent nerve damage. I can’t feel my feet. I have drop foot in both legs. I can only walk short distances with a walker and braces. Some days, I sit outside and watch people walk, run, or ride their bikes… and I can’t help but think how different my life would be if I never went out that night. I lost my ability to work. I lost my independence. And I’m still fighting every single day just to get a small part of my life back. As hard as this is for me, I truly need help.
