One meal at a time
One meal at a time is partnering with Bring the Light to provide warm meals for the homeless in the Dallas area, empowering individuals to overcome their situations by taking care of their basic everyday needs. The cost of a single meal is $4, One meal at a time has a goal of raising $1,000 which could provide 250 hot meals or other essential items for the homeless population in Dallas. The well-being of others is our main priority, by providing Dallas homeless with their necessities, we can empower them to take control of their lives and focus on their futures.
The homeless population benefits directly by having their physical needs met, and they appreciate a hot meal since those are hard for them to come across. People served also benefit emotionally from knowing their community cares about them, and interacting with caring volunteers who develop close relationships with them. By meeting people’s basic needs and easing some of their burdens, their health improves, and they are more likely to focus their energy and time on the pursuit of employment or housing.
In February 2021, there were an estimated 4,570 homeless people in Dallas County. People living in these conditions of extreme poverty, lack consistent access to food, clothing, drinking water, essential hygiene products such as toilet paper or feminine hygiene products. Although most people have the drive to better their situation, and skills necessary to get a job, as a result of their daily struggles and biases against them, they are more likely to develop negative health and mental health conditions and resort to crime, drug use, or fall victim to abuse and discrimination. Bring the Light recently purchased a new building with a kitchen (it used to be ran out of the founder's own home), 80 beds for those interested in rehabilitation, and 20 rooms for victims of sex trafficking. Therefore, the need for funding is greater than ever before.
