One Life at a Time: Helping D

One Life at a Time
This is the first of an intermittent series of opportunities for my community to help individuals who have specific needs that money can help to meet.
D is a woman of color who used to live in an RV. She was rousted from it by police in a way that caused a back injury that forces her to use a wheelchair—and a traumatic brain injury that has compromised her speech—and she no longer has the RV. No one has been charged in her assault, and no one is paying to treat her injuries. (Because of her trauma, she does not want her full name in this post, but she is known to Brown Hope, a Portland-based charity for people of color.)
She, her partner, and her service dog, need safe stable housing in order for her condition to improve. They had been living in a safe space for a while, but a series of misfortunes means that they have spent at least one night unsheltered this week—despite the promise of respite care for her—beginning any day now.
Her immediate need is for daily lodging until the respite care comes through, but they will need donations to make their space livable once she moves from respite care to their new housing.
For now, I am only asking for the funds for lodging; since we don’t know how many days until respite care, I’m asking for $2000--the first thousand has already been raised and spent. Any extra will go to food and other necessities for them. I will report back here so you know how our money is being spent. Because there is a lag between donations made and availability of funds, I am guaranteeing them until respite care is available.
I am asking for donations of $5-$25, because I want this to be affordable for most of my friends, but I will not turn away larger donations at this point.
Thanks for thinking about or praying for D, her partner, and her service dog. I hope you can give a little as well.
