We are the family of Dean Leslie Meehan, his children, grandchildren, mother, brother, and the extended family who loved him dearly, and we are writing this with broken hearts to ask for your support in bringing our Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Son, and Brother home.
Our Dad fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. He faced his illness with the same quiet strength and good humour that defined everything he did in life. He was visiting Vancouver, BC when he passed suddenly, and while we are grateful he did not suffer alone, we are now faced with the enormous task , and cost , of bringing him back to where he belongs, with his family, and so we can celebrate his life with everyone, and lay him to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Ridgeville near his Grandmother Viola, Grandfather Carson, and Father Kenneth Dilts.
To the world of Canadian rock and roll, Dean was a legend in his own right . Not from the spotlight, but from just behind it. For years he served as the trusted guitar technician and merch guy for some of the country's most iconic acts, in fact we grew up with most of them in our lives.
Saga, Honeymoon Suite, Blue Rodeo, Neil Young, Tragically Hip, Kim Mitchell, David Wilcox, Econiline Crush, Three Days Grace, The Guess Who, Bachman Turner-Overdrive, Tom Cochrane. He even worked for Beyonce. The list goes on, there are too many to count.
Those years on the road took Dean all over the world, and everywhere he went, he left a friend behind. From backstage crews to fellow techs, from venue staff to fans who somehow ended up in his orbit. Dean had a way of connecting with people that was entirely his own. He collected friendships the way most people collect memories, and those friendships stretched across cities, countries, and continents.
Our dad was hilarious. He had this incredible gift of making everyone around him infectiously laugh at his ridiculous jokes, and feel cool , like they were a rockstar themselves. It didn't matter who you were or where you came from. If you were in his circle, you mattered.
Thats just how he was. He was the kind of person who would just light up a room without even trying, and the kind of father and grandfather who made everyone in his family feel like the most important person in the world.
If you crossed paths with Our Dad, on the road, backstage, at a show, or anywhere in between, you already know exactly what we mean. And if you're reading this from somewhere far away, know that he talked about the people he met on tour with real affection. You were part of his story too. I am sure he often bragged about his kids, grand kids, and family, so you probably know a bunch about us already. He was so proud of everything they've accomplished.
He also was a huge supporter of the local music scene in Welland and Niagara, He inspired and helped get a generation of kids playing music getting their first recordings on myspace. He really was a do it all Music guy. If you listen to his Albums or have waited for his next album to drop, well... it takes him a long time because he was programming and playing all the instruments himself for the most part.
