I’m Shani, and beside Gary’s family and friends, we are starting this GoFundMe on behalf of my Uncle Gary, who has just lost everything in a devastating fire—for the second time in his life.
Gary recently set out on what he believed would be his final big trip across Australia—a well-earned adventure after facing years of hardship and recovery. Alongside a close mate, he made it all the way to Camballin, Western Australia, nearly 4,200 km from his remote home. He spent his days doing what he loves most: fishing, boating, swimming, and soaking in the beauty of the country that means everything to him.
But while camping in Camballin, disaster struck.
They returned from a day out to find both of their vehicles completely burnt to the ground. Gone were their wallets, cash, clothing, camping gear, and countless irreplaceable sentimental items.
Gary’s car—a beloved Toyota Land Cruiser—was more than a mode of transport. It had taken him across Australia more than once. It was his shelter, his freedom, his way of life. Set up perfectly for camping, it held decades of memories, adventures, and stories. Losing it has been like losing a part of himself.
Tragically, this isn’t the first time Gary has faced such a loss. Years ago, his home burned down—taking with it every memory of his late wife, all of their possessions, and the home where his children grew up.
Earlier this year, Gary underwent life-saving heart surgery—a bypass that gave him a new lease on life. This trip was planned as a way to celebrate that gift, and to say farewell to the road before settling into a quieter retirement. Now, he’s stranded, with no transport, no belongings, and no way to get home.
To make things worse, insurance won’t cover most of the losses. Gary and his friend are still trying to find somewhere to stay tonight, and figuring out how to leave the remote area they’re currently stuck in. He also urgently needs to replace his 4x4, as it’s the only way he can return to and access his isolated home.
I’m asking for help on Gary’s behalf—anything at all, big or small, to get him home safely and help him start again, once again.
Gary is one of the most gracious, kind-hearted people you’ll ever meet. He lives for nature, storytelling, and the open road. If you’ve ever sat around a campfire with him, you’d know—his stories can open your eyes to the beauty of the world.
But now, he needs our help. And I know he would never ask for it himself.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for reading, sharing, or donating. Your support means everything.
