One in a Million
Hi, I’m Caroline, and I work alongside my husband Duane (Ash) running Kitchener’s. After our son (my stepson) James, was killed in Afghanistan, we lost our way and our purpose in life. Working and living here at Kitchener’s has given us focus again. It allows us to give something back to the veteran community that means so much to us.
One in a Million: Help Us Restore Kitchener’s for the Future
Kitchener’s has always been more than a seaside holiday centre — it’s a place of rest, remembrance, and community for our veterans, serving military personnel, and emergency services workers.
For over a century, the Lord Kitchener Memorial Holiday Centre in Lowestoft has offered respite by the sea to those who’ve given so much. But time has taken its toll, and the building is now in urgent need of major repairs and upgrades to remain fit for purpose.
Why We Need Your Help
Our “One in a Million” campaign is raising funds to carry out essential renovations and improvements to Kitchener’s — to preserve it for the next generation of heroes.
With your help, we hope to:
- Restore and repair the original wooden sash windows
- Refurbish bedrooms with new furniture, flooring, and décor
- Install a larger, modern lift to improve wheelchair access
- Upgrade bathrooms and shared facilities
- Create a warmer, more welcoming environment for guests who often arrive exhausted and in need of peace
Every penny you give will go directly toward making Kitchener’s a safe, dignified, and comfortable place for those who have served.
Why It Matters
Many of our guests are veterans, serving soldiers, NHS staff, police officers and firefighters — people who put others before themselves every day. Kitchener’s gives them a place to breathe, rest, and reconnect. But we can’t keep doing that unless we future-proof this historic building.
And Kitchener’s is more than just a holiday retreat — it’s also a local hub for community support.
We proudly host:
- The Lowestoft Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club
- The Heroes Drop-In, a warm, welcoming safe space for those feeling isolated, in need of support, or just a cuppa and a biscuit with someone who understands
- The Waveney Modellers Club, offering a quiet hobby space to bring like-minded people together
- A new base for the Royal British Legion, after they lost their local drop-in
We do all this with love, and with limited resources. But with your support, we can do so much more.
Be One in a Million
Your donation, whether it’s £1, £5 or £500, makes a real difference. It’s a way of saying “thank you” to those who’ve given so much.
Together, we can ensure Kitchener’s continues to stand strong as a place of support, sanctuary, and community for years to come.
Thank you for being One in a Million.
