There are some dogs who become unforgettable parts of people’s lives, and others who live and disappear without anyone ever learning their name.
My own dog stood beside me through some of the hardest moments of my life, through hospital admissions and recovery alike, and showed me first-hand just how profoundly a dog can shape a person’s life. Through my work as an illustrator, I have also met many people who have shared similar stories about the dogs who helped them through illness, grief, loneliness, and recovery. It made me realise that every dog has the potential to change somebody’s life. Yet so many dogs never get that chance.
One Dog at a Time is a collection of portraits and stories inspired by real rescue dogs cared for by SFT Animal Sanctuary in Tangier, Morocco. I created the project after learning that millions of street dogs across Morocco are set to be killed in ann effort to ‘cleanse the streets’ ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The more I learned about these dogs, the more impossible it became to see them simply as “strays”. Each one has their own personality, experiences, and value as an individual.
Under different circumstances, many of these dogs would simply have been somebody’s dog.
Through my illustrations, I hope to encourage people to look beyond the word “stray” and recognise each dog as an individual rather than a statistic. Over the last few months, I have spent countless hours researching, writing, and illustrating the stories of rescue dogs, turning a pre-degree project into something far more meaningful than I ever imagined.
I am on a mission to help as many street dogs as possible by raising awareness and support for humane welfare initiatives, beginning with SFT’s TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release) programme. SFT is a non-profit animal sanctuary in Tangier, Morocco, run by Sally and her team.
I first discovered Sally’s documentary, ‘Beldi’ during my pre-degree project and was inspired not only by their dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs, but also by their commitment to creating lasting change through TNVR programmes and raising awareness of humane alternatives to culling.
I believe helping these dogs is our responsibility too. Not only because the 2030 FIFA World Cup will be watched and celebrated by millions of people around the world, but also as a dedication to the dogs in our own lives who have shaped us, supported us, and shown us just how special dogs can be.
This page is where I will be sharing some of the dogs cared for by SFT Animal Sanctuary, alongside their stories, the artwork they have inspired, and updates on the One Dog at a Time project.
You may also spot small bumble bees hidden throughout the illustrations. They appear as symbols of hope, resilience, and the belief that even the smallest acts of compassion can change a life. See how many you can find.
Please help in any way you can, whether that’s donating, pre-ordering the book, sharing this campaign, or simply helping more people discover the dogs behind these stories. Because change rarely happens all at once. Sometimes it begins with one small act of kindness, one dog at a time.
Together, we can help ensure that these dogs are seen as individuals, not simply as strays
