Hi everyone,
My name is Selina and I am a close friend of the family of Ken Kunkel, the victim of an unimaginable tragedy that took place November 1st in Hamilton.
Ken is a husband, father of two, grandfather and dedicated community volunteer. He was seriously assaulted while supervising young Air Cadets who were selling Remembrance Day poppies outside a restaurant at Centre Mall.
Ken is a Commanding Officer of 826 Griffin Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He has been apart of cadets for the last 20 years. Both of his children were also in cadets and now his wife, Shelly, is also involved in growing the cadet core.
According to Hamilton Police, the incident began when two youths approached the young cadets and blew an air horn directly into their ears. Concerned for the children he was responsible for, he followed the youths into the restaurant to address their behaviour.
What happened next was devastating.
An adult woman, who was not initially involved in the altercation, intervened and assaulted him, causing him to fall to the ground. The youths then struck him several times.
He was transported to hospital with life-altering injuries.
In a matter of moments, this family's entire world changed.
He is now facing a long and uncertain road ahead, including spinal surgery, an extended hospital stay and what will undoubtedly be an incredibly challenging recovery.
Behind the headlines is a real family. A wife, two children and four young grandchildren who are suddenly navigating fear, uncertainty and the overwhelming reality of having someone they love so deeply fighting through something no family should ever have to experience. This is the kind of family that would take the shirts off their backs if you are cold. They give and never take help. I would love to help them through this in any way possible.
There are so many unanswered questions about what the future will look like. What we do know is that the road ahead will be long, and the financial pressures on this family will be significant.
This is where we, as a community, can make a difference.
We are starting this fundraiser to help ease the financial burden on this family so they can focus on what matters most: his recovery, being together and navigating the difficult road ahead.
All proceeds go directly to the family to cover costs of:
-Travel and gas
-Parking costs
-Meals
-Time off of work for him, for his wife and family members that need to support
-Possible accessible equipment due to life altering injuries
-Medications
Etc.
Every donation, regardless of size, will help. If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing this fundraiser with your friends, family and community would mean just as much.
He was there for our young cadets, giving his time and helping guide the next generation. Now, it's our turn to show up for him and his family.
No family should have to navigate something like this alone. Let's surround them with the love, generosity and support of a community that cares.
Please consider donating and sharing. Every little bit helps, and together we can make a difference.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity and support.
