Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamed of flying helicopters for the United States Army. Every time I heard rotor blades overhead, I would run outside and watch until the aircraft disappeared into the sky. What started as childhood fascination became a lifelong goal: to one day sit in that cockpit and serve my country.
My name is Mildred (I go by Red) and I am raising funds to correct my eyesight so I can pursue my dream of becoming an Army helicopter pilot.
I come from a proud Hispanic military family, and service has always been something I deeply admire. Growing up hearing stories of dedication, sacrifice, and teamwork inspired me to want to serve in a meaningful way. Army aviation represents everything I believe in: courage, discipline, and the ability to help others when they need it most.
I am also a second-generation Hispanic American female whose family came from Mexico, and becoming the first college graduate in my entire family was something incredibly meaningful to me. My family worked hard to create opportunities for the next generation, and their sacrifices have pushed me to work as hard as possible to achieve my goals.
For me, becoming an Army aviator is about more than flying. It is about honoring my family, serving my country, and proving that where you start does not determine how far you can go.
Recently, I visited an eye specialist in San Antonio to see if my vision could be corrected so I could qualify for Army aviation. Because of an astigmatism in my right eye, my current vision prevents me from meeting the Army’s aviation standards.
The good news is that the doctor confirmed I am an excellent candidate for a lens implant procedure that would correct my vision and allow me to pursue Army flight training.
The challenge is the cost.
The surgery costs $7,500, which is more than I can afford on my own right now. The clinic was kind enough to reduce the price from the original $9,500, but it is still a significant barrier standing between me and my dream.
This procedure would allow me to meet the vision requirements needed to apply for Army aviation and continue pursuing the goal I have carried with me since childhood.
If you choose to donate, you are not just helping pay for a surgery; you are helping remove the final obstacle between a lifelong dream and the opportunity to serve.
Every donation, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to sitting in the cockpit of an Army helicopter and giving back to the country that has given my family so many opportunities.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting this dream. Whether through a donation or simply sharing this campaign, every bit of support brings me closer to the cockpit and the opportunity to serve something greater than myself. If you choose to contribute, please know that your generosity will directly help remove the final barrier standing between me and a lifelong goal. I am incredibly grateful for any help along this journey.
