Help Give Ondjadjaxwi a School Hall

Donation protected
Ondjadjaxwi (“own-jah-jah-hwee”) Combined School was established in 1978 in Ondjadjaxwi village in northern Namibia. Then, it was just one man teaching 30 learners under a tree.

Today, Ondjadjaxwi has about 500 students in grades ranging from kindergarten to ninth grade who are supported by 24 highly committed teachers. Through hard work and dedication, our school has expanded to have 17 permanent classrooms, a school library, flushing toilets, hand washing stations, and a school garden.

Despite our hard work, we are limited by our circumstances.

We started our school hall project in 2017 with the goal of building a complete school hall at Ondjadjaxwi Combined School. As you can see from the attached pictures, we have made a great deal of progress since then. We have a metal frame, a nearly completed roof, and the beginnings of a foundation on our school grounds.

Our school, with assistance from the community at large, has tried our level best to raise funds through donation letters and bazaars. Together, we have already managed to raise N$30,000 (USD$2,052). But we still have a long way to go, and our community is already under financial stress.

My name is Rachel Beard, a former American volunteer teacher at Ondjadjaxwi. In partnership with the school’s principal, Ms Josephine Joseph, community leader and school teacher, Ms Lusia Naxweka, and the rest of the Ondjadjaxwi community, we humbly ask for your donation to our school hall project.

Tangi unene! (Thank you very much!)

How much should I donate?

Your financial donation can make a huge difference to the Ondjadjaxwi community! Just one US dollar can purchase four bricks for our school hall. Ten dollars can purchase one circuit breaker. Twenty dollars can purchase one doorframe. Fifty dollars can purchase two window frames. Every little bit helps, and we appreciate your commitment to our project.

What will my money be used for?

All fundraising for Ondjadjaxwi will go directly towards the school hall project. We will spend donations on buying supplies for the construction of the school hall, paying for labor and transportation of materials, and purchasing furniture for the school hall. We will continue to provide updates as our school hall progresses.

How the heck do I pronounce “Ondjadjaxwi”?

Oshikwanyama is the local language in our village, and many of our students and community members are from the Kwanyama tribe. In Oshikwanyama, the letter “x” is pronounced like an “h”, so the name of our community is “own-jah-jah-hwee”.

How has COVID-19 affected the community?

The Ondjadjaxwi community takes the COVID-19 pandemic very seriously. Our school has followed guidelines laid out by the World Health Organization and the Namibian government to keep our students and staff safe. We will continue to follow these guidelines as we work on our school hall project. Check out this video of our students washing their hands as they come to school in the morning:
