I am doing a big and scary thing, but this is political, spiritual and practical.
In recent years I have been seeing the call for Black history/futures month to move past symbolic acknowledgment to a concrete action. Concrete actions as a form of celebration of the contributions Black people have made and recognition of the horrors Black people have endured in the Americas. What I am loving most about this time, Black folks are giving white and other people a chance to celebrate, honor and repair with living Black folks.
My entire career has been me learning healing and therapeutic ways to support Black people in the communities I get to be a part of. In 2020, I am in 2 different training programs outside of my full time job and organizing work. In those spaces I am still the only or one of two Black people in the room, literally. In addition to learning the material, I am constantly having to interrupt the narrative that “we are all screwed up because of our parents” and the erasure that for many Black people our trauma is this culture, society, systems and it is daily. I am also continuously translating what I am learning, making it accessible and as healing as possible to the Black folks I get to serve.
For Black Futures Month I am asking White folks looking for a way to move past symbolism to actionable contribution by donating to cover the expenses associated with these trainings. Of course this is not a clean slate, and no 2 people can give each other a clean slate in the foundational harm of the America’s. However, it would be helpful to me and a real way of contributing to a Black person in this month.
