Great Books for At-Risk Students

Put Great Books in the Hands of At-Risk Students

The truth is that sometimes, the difference between a lifelong reader and a non-reader comes down to putting the right book in the hands of a student at the right moment.

My name is Katie Reichel and I work for my hometown school district, Denton ISD, as a reading support teacher.  I’m raising money because I want EVERY middle school summer school student to have a book of his or her very own.

I know that when it comes to working with at-risk children (like the ones that will be attending summer school this year), helping them become lifelong readers often comes down to some pretty clear factors, like positive reading experiences and access to great books.  The teachers in my district have been working tirelessly to make their classrooms the kinds of places where even the most reluctant readers can have their choice of high interest books to read, think about, and talk about, so that reading becomes something more than just schoolwork, but is instead a joyful and thought-provoking experience.

However, a big challenge facing so many of our summer school students is that they have never, ever owned a book of their own.  I want to change this.  I want to give every student a book of his or her own.

In our summer school program, we encourage authentic, positive reading experiences by allowing students to select and read a book from the class library that catches their interest.  As they read, they have opportunities to thoughtfully discuss their book with peers and teachers in literature circles.  However, given the funding constraints of our summer school program, there isn’t enough time during summer school for students to finish reading the books they have started.  It is my belief that by providing each student with their very own, personal copy of the book they’ve selected and begun reading, we will reach some of our at-risk students and help them become lifelong readers.

Please donate to put great books in the hands of at-risk children.  Thank you!
