Omar's Recovery Expenses

Hello everyone. My name is Sable Tapia, and I am starting this fundraiser on behalf of my father, Omar Tapia.

Omar's health journey began on August 12th, 2022, when he was suddenly diagnosed with acute end-stage liver failure. During this time, he spent several weeks in the ICU, where they informed us that he had roughly 3-4 months to live. After being discharged, being the fighter that he is, all his energy was focused on recovering and extending his time within his capabilities. My dad took a medical leave of absence from work, allowing only three months of partial pay and being 100% responsible for his own health insurance coverage. My dad was eager to return to doing what he loved most, such as playing basketball, soccer, working alongside his coworkers, and playing the guitar. During these three months, our family had come to terms with the diagnosis and what it meant. However, we still sought out a liver specialist and made an appointment, not knowing what to expect from the visit.

My dad was offered a new chance at life when his liver specialist suggested doing a liver transplant evaluation. His hope had been restored. Roughly one month after the initial visit with his liver specialist- the doctor directly admitted him into the hospital after reviewing some concerning lab values from his weekly blood work. Once he returned to the hospital, the doctors quickly completed the transplant evaluation process, and he was listed on the transplant waiting list. On November 12th, he received a new liver.

To put into words how blessed our family feels would be impossible. Throughout my dad's recovery journey, he will need to continue to undergo extensive monitoring and physical rehabilitation. Recovery after the transplant will take roughly 12 weeks. However, with my dad being the sole provider, medical insurance costs have been an overwhelming factor that we can no longer bare on our own. We humbly ask our community, friends, and neighbors for help during this challenging time for our family.
