This is my Mister O’Malley Man. He is three years old and lives with an autoimmune disorder called stomatitis. When he gets plaque in his mouth, his immune system responds aggressively and causes tooth decay, inflammation, oral pain, and sores. When I adopted him in March 2023, the shelter and I didn’t know he had it because he was on antibiotics for a cold that masked his symptoms. Because of his illness, it became very difficult for him to eat and play.
Our local vet recommended teeth extraction surgery, but at the time, the nearest affordable specialist was two hours away. I was able to get a May appointment and spent two months monitoring his eating habits and managing his pain. The surgery was successful, and they removed fifteen affected teeth. Although they left his healthy teeth (canines and incisors), and he recovered extremely well, he’s currently having another flare up and needs the rest of his teeth removed to solve the issue. The first surgery cost around $1,000 and, although an unexpected expense, was manageable for me to afford.
His current vet at the Cat Clinic estimates his second surgery will cost between $1,892-$2,558 including pre-surgical exams and testing, x-rays to make sure all the tooth roots are removed, pain medication, and the surgery itself. I trust her as our veterinary provider because she has extensive experience with cats who have stomatitis. She says that of the 20-30 she’s treated who received this surgery, all but 2 or 3 have gone on to live long, happy, and healthy lives eating and playing like other cats.
Since moving back to North Carolina last February, I have been working hard to improve my financial stability and provide for O’Malley, but we have faced barriers. I recently got a better paying job, but between multiple relocations with rent increases and his first surgery, saving for future expenses has been extremely difficult.
O’Malley has completed blood work and a cardiac test and been cleared for surgery. The results will be considered invalid within three months, so we are tentatively scheduled for July 9th in hopes that I will have the funds by then. I have already reached out to animal charities in the area and am excited to share that the Asheville Humane Society will be donating $300, and I'll be eligible for the Asheville Cat Weirdos Emergency Vet fund at the end of June! In addition, my roommate and her partner will be working with me on rent, but I’m also asking my friends, family, and community to help me raise $800 towards his treatment. I’m going to do my best to save the remainder ($1,000-$1,800) on my own. Once the rest of his teeth are removed, his quality of life will increase dramatically!
