Olympic Handball Dream: Rylee's Journey

I was the kid who played sports every day during recess and lunch. Kicked a soccer ball down the school hallway. The girl who showed up to algebra drenched in sweat because she tried as hard as she possibly could (and then some) in gym class. Sports weren’t just something I did, sports were my entire identity.

My dream growing up was to be an athlete and compete at the highest level possible. I achieved part of that dream when I attended Wesleyan University as a two-sport varsity athlete. Not without its challenges however: I faced injury after injury after injury. Five knee surgeries. I persevered. Then my senior season was cut short by Covid. I wanted to play with all my heart, but college was over. Was this it?

I shifted gears, and moved to Los Angeles, hopeful for a new beginning. I had decided to pursue a career in screenwriting. An entirely different kind of competition that honed my sense of strategy and game. I stayed physically active playing beach volleyball and ultimate frisbee, telling myself that was enough to satisfy my intrinsic ‘sports’ side. It wasn’t.

Then one day, I saw an ad online:
“The U.S. Women’s Olympic Handball Team is hosting an open tryout tomorrow. No handball experience necessary.”

The feeling of pushing myself to the limit alongside incredible athletes. The dream was back, and it was bigger than I ever could’ve imagined. By god did I try out, with a fervor more than I had ever experienced, and it paid off:

“Congratulations. You have been selected to participate in the U.S. Women’s National Handball Residency Program in Fort Pierce, Florida.”

I got in. I’m going to give it my all.

I’m gladly rearranging my life for this opportunity; I will be relocating from California to Florida and dedicating the next two years to full-time training with the national team. Because of the demanding training schedule, maintaining a traditional full-time job simply isn’t possible.

That’s why your sponsorship would mean the world to me.

The U.S. Women’s National Handball Residency Program trains athletes full-time with the goal of building a competitive team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Unlike many Olympic programs, U.S. Team Handball does not fund its residency athletes. Players are responsible for covering relocation, housing, food, training expenses, and travel to tournaments around the world.

Your sponsorship will help cover essential living and training expenses so I can focus fully on becoming the best athlete possible and representing the United States at the highest level.

This journey is about more than just making the team. It’s about standing on the Olympic stage, representing my country, and proving that sometimes the path to your dream takes unexpected turns before leading you exactly where you’re meant to be.
If you’re able to donate, share this page, or connect me with potential sponsors, it would mean the world!!

Thank you for believing in me and being part of this journey.

Let’s go chase an Olympic dream.
