In June of 2020, Korri and Tyler sold their home in order to save money and find a new home in a better neighborhood to raise their son, Hudson in. With the housing market extremely competitive and expensive, they felt lucky to find a fixer upper in the neighborhood they wanted, within their budget. The only downside was there were renters currently occupying the home. Korri and Tyler were told that after the sale of the house, the eviction of the tenants would be easy and they would be in their house within 60 days. They closed escrow on their home on July 24, 2020, the same day they were married!
After the house was sold, they found out the tenants had not paid rent in years to the previous owner (a family member of theirs who was lenient on collecting rent.) In August, an eviction moratorium was enacted that prevented tenants from being evicted due to Covid related hardships. All evictions were put on hold, and the court system essentially stopped hearing all cases. The Olsen's were lumped into this category of not being able to evict these tenants, even though this case is completely unrelated to Covid. The renters were given a 60 day notice to vacate, which they have ignored. They have legal aid that is fighting for their right to stay in this home, and the Olsen's have already racked up $10,000 in legal fees simply trying to move into their own house. As of December 2020, a court date of March 2021 has been set for one of the renters of the house. This means that the Olsen's will be paying a mortgage on a house they cannot live in for at least another 3 months. They are still paying a lawyer, while the renters receive free legal aid. All the money they had saved to fix this home is quickly disappearing. Korri is also a hair salon owner, who has now had to go through three business shutdowns. They have barely managed to stay afloat- paying the mortgage on the house, paying the lease on her salon, and trying to manage all the mounting legal bills. We have reached out to the mayor of Lakewood. We have reached out to the LA County Board of Supervisors. We have tried to get the attention of local news stations to bring awareness to this issue because there is no way they are the only ones in this situation. No one has been able to help or has gotten back to them.
Now, there is a rumor of extending the moratorium until December 2021. This means that the Olsen's will have owned their home for over a year and have never been able to live in it, all while renters continue to take advantage of Covid and reside there rent free. They have claimed they are afraid to move because of Covid, yet have had large gatherings of people over at the house. They claim they don't have the money to move. Korri and Tyler have offered them thousands of dollars, multiple times, to leave, and they have refused it. Social Services has tried to help them find a place to live, and the tenants won't take their help. Korri and Tyler are trying to stay positive, but they are quickly losing faith and confidence. We hope to try and show them a little support, even if it means helping pay their legal fees for a month. Thank you for any help, or for simply reading our story and getting the word out.
