Diabetic alert dog for Ollie ❤

On February 6, 2019 our lives changed forever. Ollie had been acting sick for the past few days and was constantly wanting to drink. Asa took him to our family doctor to be evaluated and he couldn't figure out what was wrong. He quickly consulted with another provider and they checked his blood sugar and urine. His blood sugar was to high for the monitor to read and his urine showed large amounts of ketones. They told us to go straight to Nationwide Children's Hospital ER. When we arrived, they rushed him back to the critical care unit where he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. His blood sugar was 721. They worked very quickly to get IVs started but because he was so dehydrated it was difficult. They admitted him to the PICU and began Insulin treatment through his IV. After 3 days in the hospital we were discharged home to care for Ollie.

Since being home, we are still having bumps along the way. He has his days that his blood sugars are super high and his days that he is super low.  We have inquired about a service dog for him to help all of us know when his blood sugars are dropping dangerously low as well as getting dangerously high. Being able to know the difference at this time is so difficult because he can't tell us how he is feeling and extra finger checks can be grueling.

We have reached out to a company called Diabetic Alert Dogs of America! They are based out of Las Vegas, Nevada. They have a great program that assists with training dogs specifically to help alert caregivers of any kind of blood sugars that are dropping or rising to high before the issues start to occur!!

The process itself can take up to 8 months for us to get a dog. While this seems like such a long time, the safety of our boy means so much to us. This is why we are asking for any and all kinds of help with raising funds to help Ollie get his support dog as well as sharing our story to help raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to reach out to us!

Any bit of assistance for our little fighter to get a service dog is so appreciative! ❤
