Ollie Sausage Poison Treatment
Our beautiful sausage dog Ollie became critically ill on Sunday 23rd August after ingesting rat poison (which was later confirmed on Monday 24th).
At first we thought he had a stomach bug as he was vomiting but then he passed a large amount of blood from his bottom. We rushed him to the emergency vet in the middle of the night and was treated for sickness. With no improvement by the morning we took him back to the vet where he was admitted to the veterinary hospital.
We had went for a short walk around the estate on Saturday which may have been when he’s ingested it or something has been thrown in our garden.
The news up to now has not been good at all and we honestly thought he wouldn’t survive. Ollie has been critically unwell for days.
Treatment so far (off the top of my head)-
Decompression of stomach
Removed fluid from lungs
K-treatment for the initial poisoning
Various drips - to maintain glucose levels and potassium and rehydration
Treatment for kidney failure - kidneys are now reducing in size
Blood levels regarding pancreas are on the rise
Ollie hasn’t been able to regulate his temperature and has had a heat mat in his crate.
Feeding tube as he hasn’t been taking food orally
Various scans / blood tests
Consultation with Edinburgh University for advice on why Ollie was not responding to treatment.
Today (27/8/2020) the vet called and said Ollie’s condition is more stable although still connected to fluids and ongoing investigations still being carried out.
The tinker has figured out he can sneeze out his feeding tube which he did 3 times yesterday so they have decided to syringe feed him instead. The vets say he is happier in himself and is wagging his tail when they take him in to their garden and is more vocal barking for attention (which is more like him). The nurse has said he enjoys a cuddle on her knee has she does her paperwork so much brighter than previous days.
We don’t have any firm decision on him coming home just yet but we are extremely hopeful and we know the road ahead for his recovery may be long but we just want our boy back .
It’s not in our nature to ask for help and the sad reality is if we had of waited for an insurance to give the go ahead for treatment then Ollie quite frankly wouldn’t be here.
We have set up a Go Fund Me page if anyone would like to donate, we would be grateful for any help He is our little ray of sausage shaped sunshine .
We are in discussion with Gateshead Council and our local police.
Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts
