Hi Friends! I was honored to be accepted to participate in an incredible service experience and internship this summer (2018) through the Atlantis Project. As part of the program I would spend 4 weeks in Ferrol, Spain shadowing physicians 20 hours per week in a hospital and strengthening my Spanish since I plan to complete a Spanish certificate alongside my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Each week I will get to shadow a different specialty such as Surgery, Cardiology and Pediatrics. Additionally, I will have the opportunity to participate in service--teaching English to the community's youth, medical professionals and unemployed adults.
As a Nursing student, I am very excited about the prospect of observing a healthcare system outside of the United States. With the emphasis that has been placed on recognizing and appreciating cultural diversity in my Nursing program at the University of Cincinnati, I truly believe this to be an invaluable experience.
I have been preparing for this opportunity rigorously by working 30+hours a week while maintaining my grades as a full time nursing student and serving for six different campus organizations. I have been taking classes to learn Spanish as it pertains to the medical profession and I look forward to applying this second language to my studies.
The cost of the program is $5,200 which covers the following: shadowing 20 hours/week, a department rotation every week to explore different specialties, housing, a light breakfast and 4 group meals/week, one group excursion per week, daily transport to and from the hospital, travel health insurance, a local phone for emergencies and 24 hour support by site managers. In addition I will need to cover the costs for my flight ($1700), additional food and transportation to and from the airport.
