Olivia has been fighting a chronic disease for awhile now, she was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome a few years ago. Due to this disorder her mast cells don’t work properly, making her more susceptible to randomly frequent anaphylaxis. Olivia has been working with a great MCAS team of doctors to try and find the right therapy for her body. She has become allergic to multiple lines of therapy in the past, making it difficult to manage her symptoms. Xolair is a common MCAS medication given once a month to manage chronic anaphylaxis and asthma. She was hopeful this would be the medication to help stabilize her mast cells. Over a month ago, Olivia was receiving her 3rd dose of Xolair and within 10 mins suffered from severe anaphylaxis and ended up in the ICU for nearly 2 weeks. Though she is home now, she is still running her own infusion center in her home daily. She receives IV therapy 24/7. To reduce cost, she has been trying to manage her care at home rather than going back to the hospital. She is unable to work and the road ahead is unclear. Weekly testing and labs are being done in addition to many doctors visits. Though it’s been two months since her Xolair admission, Olivia’s mast cells have continued to cause her ongoing issues. She is still trying to gain strength and slowly eliminate all IV medications, electrolyte replacement and parental nutrition. As this is a chronic illness, it will always be a problem from Olivia but her goal is to try every route available to help heal her inside & out. This is going to be a slow process to recovering, as this was one of her worst flares to date. As a result of this recent severe mast cell crisis, she has become extremely weak and unable to do her daily activities alone. She is working with a whole mast cell team of doctors including immunology, allergy, neurology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, cardiology, pulmonology, dermatology, psychology, genetics, dietary, occupational therapy and physical therapy. She has a great team who work closely together in order to create the most optimal, ongoing plan for Olivia’s healing. She is working with them weekly to help her regain her strength and get back to the things she loves. Olivia has been extremely positive despite not knowing what her future holds. As she continues to get treatment, there’s no doubt that her medical bills are getting expensive. Finances have become a stressor as she can not work and isn’t sure when she will be able to return to work at this time. Every little bit will help, if not financially - every prayer is appreciated.
