Wheelchair Van for a Differently-Able Funny Girl
Hello, my name is Karina Peters. I am blessed with my daughter Olivia, who is 5 years old. Olivia was born with a rare condition, called pontocerrebellar hypoplasia, which significantly impairs her gross and fine motor skills. Every day, unconscious movements that you and I take for granted are nearly impossible for her. Olivia doesn't have the ability to scratch her arm if she has an itch or turn her body if she uncomfortable. She cannot eat or drink, lift her arms, sit up without assistance, walk and will always rely on others for her daily needs.
Using her motorized wheelchair gives Olivia great joy and independence. She uses her chair to get around her school, socialize with her peers and participate in her cheerleading squad. Her school has a wheelchair van that we can use but any other family outing has become increasingly difficult . Right now Olivia rides in a car seat, that she is quickly growing out of, and we bring her wheelchair in the back of my SUV. I have to use heavy, awkward ramps to get her wheelchair in and out of the car. I isn't an easy task for me and I am normally looking for some kind stranger to help me.
Trying to get Olivia in and out of the car is difficult and becoming more and more dangerous for Olivia. Not only do we struggle to hold her and get her in her chair safely but we also have to be careful that we don’t rip out her feeding tube. Being able to give Olivia the gift of a wheelchair van would be a blessing to her and to our family. It would allow Olivia keep her independence and would allow her to ride comfortably in her wheelchair on car rides.
Please consider making a donation to support the purchase of Olivia wheelchair van. Any dollar amount will help us. The purchase price of a van is between $40,000 and $60,000. Generally financing is not available for the adaptations that it needs to become wheelchair accessible.
Thank you and God bless.
