Olivia and Sophia's Transplant Recovery
Donation protected
Olivia and Sophia were diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia as infants. This rare disorder is a bone marrow failure that, up until recently, required biweekly blood transfusions for survival. In December, the family received news that the transfusions were negatively impacting the twins' organs and that they had to start searching for bone marrow donors. By July, they had found (2) matches who committed to a transplant. Almost immediately, the girls began to condition and prepare their bodies to undergo the surgery in early August.
The night prior to admission, the family was notified that Olivia’s donor was suddenly unable to donate. Fortunately, 10 days later, they received word that a new match had been found and that her transplant journey would begin in September.
Sophia’s journey continued as planned though, and she received her transplant on August 11th.
The road ahead will be a long one. The girls are required to be admitted for approximately 6 weeks post-transplant and from there, they will be in isolation for several months. They will be homeschooled during their 8th-grade year and travel to and from AI Hospital several times a week.
To care for her daughters during this time, their mother, Falon, is taking a leave of absence from work. Doing so adds more weight and (financial) stress to an already heavy and unimaginable load.
In an effort to alleviate some of that burden, and to ensure the family can focus solely on the health of the twins, this GoFundMe was created to help with the medical costs, in addition to the loss of income.
If you're unable to donate monetarily, please contribute by keeping the twins in your prayers.
