Our names are Kyle and Ashley, and on August 11th of 2023 we unexpectedly became NICU parents of a beautiful, strong baby boy, Oliver James, at 25w and 3d gestation. As dad was walking out the door for work on a happy pay-day, mom woke up with some complications that had arisen from a subchorionic hematoma, and next thing you know, Ashley and Oliver (still in mom's belly) got to go on a helicopter ride all the way to Marshfield Chidren's Hospital.

After an almost 8 hour battle with her complications, Ashley had began to have a sharp rise in pain, as we didn't know she had a placental abruption from all of the activity happening inside of her. So just before 7pm, Ollie came into this world via emergency c-section, just as big as shock as when we found out about him! Dad waited nearby and watched them work on Ollie until he was hooked up to everything and stable, before heading back to his new temporary home in NICU. After checking on mom, we both got to finally sit back and rest for only a brief while before it all began...

Honestly, we knew that Oliver was a surprise when we found out about him in February. We had a plan to be ready for 3 months FROM now when we were planning our Thanksgiving surprise to be home, but not this. We have already been shown so much love and support from everyone, yet people have been urging us to set this up.

We are both stubborn, but we are also both completely turned upside down at all of this. Oliver's four older brothers are all unable to meet him, dad's been back at work since week 1, and mom is recuperating for 6 weeks or more after surgery. We have been going about things "one minute, one hour, one day at a time." That's the motto for our prize-fighting champion, Oliver James, who is a 45 minute drive away from us. And even though we have fantastic resources from Marshfield, and a fantastic support network with friends and family, we know Oliver and the rest of us are very blessed to have you and your support, regardless if you can help or not.

Being in NICU is not something we ever expected for him. Every day our little champion is doing his best to grow and be healthy, and we know we can't be there 24 hours a day, but we can already see why this is so hard. We are faced with new numbers, medical terms, obstacles and questions every day, and we honestly don't know if Oliver will need intensive care once he comes home, or if any complications may arise, but we can only hope for the best.

Neither of us have any idea how we go all the way until November trying to lead "normal lives" when all we can think about is how to deal with what may come next. We know that he is loved, and we are beyond grateful at anyone who can help us, in any way. All funds donated are going directly to use for gas, food, bills, extra daycare and babysitting for bubby G (19mo), with mom unable to handle the little tank on her own full-time. We still are only 2 weeks into all of this, and are anxiously awaiting what every day might bring for Oliver and Co. We love and appreciate you all, and are so thankful for all the love you've given our Oliver James!!!
