Hello,
We are the Conway Family: Evan, Hailee, Oliver, and Alex. Our son Oliver is 8 years old. We live in Victoria, BC. For a number of months, Oliver has been having troubling, intense headaches. On May 2, 2023, after an investigative CT scan, it was discovered that he had a cancerous brain tumor. Life for our family changed on a dime, and we suddenly found ourselves with Oliver at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver awaiting surgery to remove the tumor. Later that week he had the tumor removed successfully. Unfortunately, post-op testing confirmed that the tumor had metastasized to another part of his brain. It has been the darkest days of our life.
Oliver requires many months of treatment. He will have up to 6 months of chemotherapy at BC Children's Hospital and 6 weeks of radiation therapy in Seattle.
Hailee, a Certified Dental Assistant, and Evan, an Electrician, have each had to take a leave of absence from their jobs in Victoria to be present with Oliver in Vancouver through his neurosurgery and now as he begins his chemo and radiation.
Upcoming costs for our family as we naviagate this new chapter of our lives:
- Travel between Victoria and Vancouver for Hailee and Evan as they continue to care for Oliver in Vancouver and Alex in Victoria.
- Travel costs to and from Seattle during Oliver's radiation therapy. (The cost of treatment is covered, and we are hoping we will be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald house while there. But we will be going back and forth to Victoria sometimes weekly during these six weeks).
- Food costs for Hailee and Evan during their time at BC Children's Hospital and in Seattle.
- Unexpected costs that may arise throughout this new journey (extra transportation, hotels etc.).
