Some of you may or may not know me. I am Taylor Askey and I am a mother and wife. I am also a fur mother to two little yorkies who are the light of our and our children’s eyes. One in particular, Olive, is my daughter's best friend. She loves her to pieces (sometimes a little too much) and Olive loves her back. On the night of Tuesday October 6th our little Olive was ferociously attacked by an animal. She somehow escaped and hid, so we could not find her all night and were devastated thinking that something fatal had happened to her.
Our neighbor across the street was up early to do his gardening and noticed Olive hiding under his shed, recognized her and brought her over immediately. She had bite or claw marks on her side and was in shock, so we rushed her to the hospital around 8:30AM. After the vets completed their examination, they said Olive had to be sedated for x-rays to see if there was any internal damage - as her lacerations were quite deep. They found that her lung had been punctured, allowing oxygen into her body cavity and making it hard for her to breathe. They also found that the right side of her jaw was fractured. They had to put her under anesthesia to suture the puncture in her lung and the lacerations. They put a drain in as well to help with the healing and prevent an abscess. The vet gave us a call once that was complete and told us they do not perform dental surgeries and we would have to call a specialist about fixing her jaw. We were able to take her home late that evening with wet food and pain medication. During the time Olive was at the vet, they kept us updated with each procedure and cost, which was $2200 that we paid in full when we picked her up. But we still have the matter of her fractured jaw.
We can be only so prepared for sudden accidents and emergencies, and if you know our family, you know we have been through a lot of medical emergencies with our family this year alone. As I schedule the appointment with the vet dental specialist, it turns out to repair our Olive’s jaw requires another surgery to wire her mouth semi closed with a sling-like contraption for 4-6 weeks - giving her jaw time to heal. The cost of this procedure and the examinations needed before surgery is approximately $6500. We love our Olive and this tragic accident and seeing her in pain is heartbreaking. We ask for any donation - whether toward her medical bill or keep Olive in your thoughts. She is under 4 pounds, a tiny little thing and although scary, she needed this surgery desperately. We all know this is a hard time during the Pandemic but appreciate anything you can do to help us - no amount is too small.
Please share our story with your family and friends, and we thank you for all your kind words, thoughts and prayers for Olive!
With Love,
The Askey's
