On December 10th, University of Florida PhD candidate Olga Munoz was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver while jogging on the Hawthorne Trail where it crosses Williston Road. While multiple cars stopped and allowed her to cross, one vehicle drove through, striking Olga and throwing her body a great distance forward. Olga sustained very serious injuries but thanks to quick action on the scene as well as world class care from Shands, Olga’s life was saved and she is expected to make a full recovery.

While she does have medical insurance that should cover much of her costs, it will not cover 100% and she will be responsible for the remaining balance. Her long recovery will require continued care, therapy, and frequent recheck appointments. Olga is a beloved friend to so many both here in the Gainesville and the university community, but also has friends and family in Ecuador and around the world. There has been overwhelming support and a desire to help in Olga’s recovery, which is why we’ve set up this Go Fund Me campaign to cover her uncovered medical expenses. We’ve set a modest goal of $15,000 based on her estimated medical expenses.
