Many of us have been dreading to hear this news for months. Oleg Ostapenko has died.
It is difficult to estimate how many people know Oleg and Lilya in the Detroit area, especially in the Russian-speaking community. Whether a broken sump pump fixed by Oleg or piano lessons taught by Lilya, this couple has touched so many lives in so many positive ways. They were a wonderful, hard working family that was always ready to help, never turning their back on anyone.
And then the terrible diagnosis came out of nowhever, shattering their lives. However, there was hope and Oleg fought. He never complained and never gave into pain and self-pity of "Why me?" He never stopped smiling and never lost hope, not until his last breath, which he took today. He is no longer in pain. But the pain is still here, torturing those who love him, crippling his wife Lilya and daugher Julia. None of us can take that pain away from them. But we can try to make this terrible hardship a little easier on them by helping reduce the financial burden of death preceeded by prolonged illness.
Staggering bills, funeral expences, lost wages - all of this adds up to large sums of money creating additional stress for people trying to cope with a tragedy. If any of you wish to help, please consider donating. No amount of money is too small. It's the least we can do, together, as a community.
