Papa
A short introduction about who you’re helping. Here’s a picture of an 81 year old man currently living in Togo. I call him ‘’Papa!’’. He’s not just my father. He is my backbone, inspiration, brave heart, source of wisdom, source of strength and a great man. His only religion is kindness and his power is education.
My father’s story begins back in 1973 where he first came to Lebanon to work. He’s not a university graduate, so he had to work as a house keeper. He has witnessed the 1975 Lebanese Civil War and lived to tell the tales. He has lived in Lebanon for 38 years saving up a small amount for his retirement for when he decides to go back home. The agreement with his employer was to send the money directly to a bank at home, which he later found out there was no savings and everything was a pretend.
My dad met my mum in Lebanon, whom herself was a migrant from the Philippines and got married giving birth to my elder sister and I. They have been through thick and thin for almost 31 years till my mum passed away.
The Husband.
My dad was a supportive husband. Whatever my mum decided to do my dad always supported her. He protected her. There was a small incident my mum related to us that happened during the Civil War. My mum and dad used to work for the same employer. My mum had to go get some groceries for the house so my dad accompanied her, but distanced himself walking in front of her, watching for any sniper surprises. He told her to run as fast as she could back home if he were to get hit. He was very understanding and patient towards my mum.

My dad is the type of person who loves history, politics, geography, music, and reading, anything that stirs his thinking. He’d love a book for a present. During the day, you’ll find him reading his newspaper. At night, watching the news, history channel or a comedy show. Before going to bed, he’ll read a book. To fall asleep he’ll turn on the radio, tuned to the BBC, and place it on his chest. His Sunday mornings, would be listening to gospel, country, reggae music. My dad always thought us that kindness must be our religion and to always be patient with any obstacle we face in life. He’s the father that writes phrases and proverbs on pieces of paper for us memorize. He’s also the father that refers to a quote in a book about anything you ask.
My reason for asking your help.
After living in Lebanon for 38 years, he was forced to leave. The insurance company refused to give him work insurance due to his age, therefore, he can’t renew his residence permit, so he had to leave the country. After this period, my dad thought that he had some money left in savings that were supposedly sent to a bank back home, which turned out to be not true. I was sending him money every end of the month, but due to the economic crisis here in Lebanon I could no longer send him money. Now, he is in need of medical attention. He got an eye infection that needs to be treated and probably needs surgery. He no longer sees with his right eye. He needs to pay rent and buy food. I just can’t be on stand by watching his life unfold like this. This is my last resort. I can’t afford to pay for surgery and I can’t see him suffer like this.
He’s a good husband, father, and a friend. His only fault was that he trusted his future will be taken care off and after living a life of serving others for 38 years this was the Thank you he has gotten. Till this day when l call him, he tells me he’ll get a job and learn about the computer and internet. He tells me not to worry. He wants to lift the burden, but he’s not a burden. He’s all I’ve got. I just need your help. I need whoever his or her religion is kindness to help my Papa just to live a decent life with no worries or pain. He’s already 81 years old. I want him to live whatever time he has in peace.
