Richard A. Martinez, known to many Parkites as “The Ol’ Miner,” passed away on March 28, 2017. Our Dad loved being able to say he was born and raised in Park City and lived his entire 82 years in this town. He was proud of his Park City heritage. Our Mother, Leona Martinez, as well as all nine children are also proud to say we were born and raised in Park City. Our father was an integral part of the community, graduating from Park City High School in 1954 and spending his entire career working in the Park City Mines. Many items that our Dad made were used in Park City and at the ski resort, including some of the first chairs on the chair lifts at Treasure Mountain Resort, a drinking fountain on Main Street that he made out of a mine drill, and a merry go round that was used at the Marsac Elementary School for many years. Alongside our Grandfather, our Dad owned and operated the “Cozy Tavern” a local watering hole for Park City residents, and worked for decades delivering the Tribune and Deseret News throughout the Park City area. He also served on the Park City City Council for 16 years throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This was during the time that Park City was changing from being a mining town to a world class ski area. He supported the change and eagerly welcomed newcomers to our growing community.
On September 12, 2019, the City Council approved of our family donating a bronze statue to the City in honor of our father as well as to honor all miners who have worked in the Park City Mines. The City plans to place the statue at the new Treasure Hill Trailhead. Our family believes that the Treasure Hill Trailhead is the perfect location to place the statue to signify the merging of Park City’s mining heritage with its renowned name as a world class ski area. We are thrilled that a statue, honoring our father and the community’s rich mining heritage, will welcome community members and tourists alike when visiting this special area.
Attached is a picture of our father competing in the Park City Mucking and Drilling Competition in the 1960’s. This is the picture the local sculptor, Luna Bronze, will use to create the statue. Attached to the statue will be a plaque with the following inscription:
This statue is dedicated to the contributions of Richard A. Martinez, the “Ol’ Miner”, and to all other miners who worked in the mining tunnels below Park City, Utah. May we always remember and preserve our mining heritage.
The purpose of this fundraiser is to allow community members the opportunity to contribute toward preserving our Park City mining heritage through creating this statue. Our family is contributing a significant amount as are several other donors. We are hoping that contributions from the Park City community will help fund the remaining amount. Contributions may be made through GoFundMe or through a private check sent to: The Martinez Family Trust, P.O. Box 941, Francis, Utah 84036. Please note: your donation is not tax-deductible, as we are not a non-profit agency. We do, however, guarantee that 100% of the donations we receive will go toward payment for the statue.
Thank you for your consideration of contributing to this special project. We are excited to partner with you in honoring Park City’s rich mining history!
