Hello!

My name is Jonah Manimtim, and my team and I are raising funds for my upcoming drama short film called Okay? Alright.

The film is currently competing as a Top 8 Finalist in the 10 Minute Short category of the Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM21) by the Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF30).

Okay? Alright. is about Elliot, a 30 year old reclusive man who goes back in time to kill his mother (who left immediately after giving birth) in hopes of ceasing to exist.

When picked up from his father, Elliot realizes that the parents he thought he knew are completely different. They’re happy and hopeful, not jaded and cynical as he has come to know them as. This slowly but surely shifts Elliot’s world view as it’s turned his perspective upside down, and when he thinks things can’t get any worse, there’s a random old man at his parents’ old farmhouse.

Elliot spends the rest of the story trying to understand why his mother left him and his father when she gave birth, and trying to forgive her. In doing so, he learns more about himself and learns that it was his parents’ first time living as well.

In the end, Elliot comes to terms with his life, viewing it in an epilogue sort of way. He travels back to his current time and grows old, something he never thought he’d do.

'Okay? Alright.' is a story about navigating loss of culture and family through the lens of a main character who feels like an imposter in any time he visits.

It's easy to feel like the 'other', in any situation you're in. Our goal at The ManimTeam is to help you feel seen and heard. To give you a hug through the screen and tell you that everything will be okay.

Alright?

What will donations be used for?
With your help, the funds will go towards:

  • Grip and Electrics gear
  • Food for the Cast & Crew
  • Permits for Filming Locations
  • Production Design

Additionally, if you've ever dreamt about seeing your name on the silver screen, your donation will land yourself in the Special Thanks section of the credits!

Director's Statement:
This film, while it may sound dark and dreary, is at it's core supposed to serve as something hopeful and beautiful. Elliot doesn't want to kill his parents out of spite or vengeance; he's not a violent man, just a sad one. He simply wants to cease from existing. A feeling I feel most people experience going through their day-to-day.

The objective of this film is to reach out to the widest demographic, while comforting the minority. It's easy to feel left out, or out of place, as Elliot often does, and hopefully the film makes those that feel like the other feel included and loved. We want to give you a hug through the screen.

My team is filled with first time filmmakers, dreamers, passionate learners, and above all, people who genuinely love the medium of film with all their heart. It's only about time that their individual passion gets channelled onto the big screen to show off their talent and love.

I understand it's a lot to ask, "Another GoFundMe for a short film that might not even come out?!"

I get it.

However, no matter the donation, big or small, we all appreciate the time you took to read this.

Without you, the independent film scene wouldn't be this important and rapidly growing as we speak.

Without you, there would be no theatres.

Without you, there would be no film.

So, thank you for your time and patience, and I hope to see you sometime soon.
