Official Alano Club of Lahaina

Aloha,

My name is Tom Martindale. My wife, Jessica, and our one-year-old son live here on Maui in a home just north of Lahaina. Fortunately, we were spared the devastation, but obviously many weren’t.

I’ve seen many things in my life, having served on Navy EOD teams in Desert Storm and Somalia, but I don’t believe anything compares with this. It has been heartbreaking to watch the community be destroyed, but also amazing to see everybody pull together. In a weird way, it’s when we have grave challenges that we get to show the best of our true selves. I’m hoping this is the case for our beautiful island.

On October 11 of this year, God willing, I will have 10 years of sobriety. That’s been its own road with crazy ups and downs but I’m grateful for where I am today. The Maui recovery community is exceptional and in Lahaina, we have an Alano Club; it’s a building dedicated to recovery meetings and helping people. This Club has not only provided great comfort to those in the community but it’s helped countless visitors. Many vacations on Maui would have imploded if it weren’t for the Alano Club of Lahaina! It is with tremendous sadness that I report that it has burned to the ground, leaving only the Alano Club sign and, ironically, a bench, where two or more can gather. I think Bill and Bob had something to do with that.

Over the next days and weeks, I’m sure you and all your friends will be beseeched to reach into your pocket and help various people. They all need it, it’s all valid. But if there’s a place in your heart for people who are staying sober, and helping others to achieve sobriety, I would ask that you take a look at helping support us rebuild the Alano Club of Lahaina.
