The Grover C. Fields Problem 1 OM team is eligible to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University May 24th-27th, 2023. The team of 7th and 8th graders (coached by Anne Morini): Kaitlyn Allen, Lilianna Sobrido, Ian Miller, Claire Morini, Connor Bertling, Alex Coleman and Haley Whitehead qualified for the World Finals by winning 1st place at the North Carolina State Tournament in Raleigh on March 25th.

The team designed and built a ride-on vehicle that is presented as a pirate ship. They created an original performance about a group of pirate characters that reclaim stolen treasure and return it to the Queen’s Kingdom. A Captain Character and an additional rider maneuver the ship on a course and perform different technical functions. The performance also includes a sea monster character and a song composed by the team.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international team-based creative problem-solving competition that engages students in their learning by allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Participants build 21st Century Skills, create new friendships, and are able to recognize and explore their true potential. Problems naturally lend themselves to a STEM and Art focus also requiring a dramatic presentation. Students bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Teams from almost every state & 25 other countries participate in the program.

Grover C. Fields is a public Middle School in Craven County North Carolina. The team will be fundraising and asking for donations to reach their $15,000 goal to help cover expenses to the competition in Michigan.
