Odyssey of the Mind World Championship

Durham and Middlefield have two teams of students that qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind World Championships at Michigan State! We’re competing under the Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation banner.
OM is a creative problem solving program in which teams of up to 7 kids solve long term and short term problems without outside assistance from adults. Teams choose from 5 long term problems and spend months working together to develop a solution that is presented through an 8 minute skit. On tournament day, teams also compete in a short-term Spontaneous, or brainstorming, problem. All of the work the teams do is done by the kids alone; no adults, including the coach, can contribute ideas or help make the props, structures, devices, or vehicles. The kids develop problem solving skills, team work, and creativity.
Our Division 1 Team, comprised of 7 students in grades 3-5, chose to solve a problem that required them to build a balsa wood structure weighing no more than 15 grams that would hold as much weight as possible. Our structure held 140 pounds! The team presented their structure in the context of a carnival theme. They gained extra points by building a catapult to toss their balsa wood structure over a 2 foot tall barrier.
Our Division 2 Team, comprised of 7 students in grades 5-8, chose to solve a problem that required them to build a vehicle that would fit inside a suitcase that a superhero and sidekick character would then drive to perform three different rescues in the course of an 8 minute skit.
The Division 1 team includes Cole Wilson, Charlie Dalles, Daphne Liss, Hope Giammatteo, Allison Booth, Tommy Wickwire, and Madelyn Ventola.
The Division 2 team includes Tess Lussier, Izzy Weissberg, Annika Liss, Abigail Waterman, Christine Waterman, Mary Spenceley Taylor, and Catherine Taylor.
Your support will help our teams cover the costs of travel and lodging to the OM World Championships at Michigan State University in May. 30,000 people will participate in this four-day competition.
The teams worked for months on their OM projects. Thank you so much for helping them participate in this amazing and unique experience!
I am running this campaign as the coach of one of the two teams that qualified for worlds. I am also the dad of one of the competitors. Once the campaign is complete, I will withdraw the funds from this campaign to my personal bank account and the funds will be equally distributed to all team members in cash.
