Ever since I was young one of my favorite games to play was “shop.” I distinctly remember selling my brother LEGO mini-fig parts using bricks as currency! To this day nothing has changed, and it is still my biggest life goal to open my shop, Odd’s Bodkins, in Salem, MA.
Odd’s Bodkins as it stands is an online and pop-up shop selling “oddities, clothing, home decor, and fine artwork for the strange and unusual.” To be more clear, I sell curiosities and antiques alongside my own artwork and a monochrome array of curated secondhand clothing. I have a wholistic view of my ideal world and I am eager to share my vision with others who, like me, don’t find what they’re looking for in the mainstream.
My long-term vision for Odd’s Bodkins is a shop that is an oasis from the normal. I aspire to sell not only second hand and antique goods, but also small brands that I am passionate about and whose vision aligns with my own. I would also like to be able to host artwork for sale from artists other than myself in order to share the newfound visibility.
The ability to set up a permanent space in which my aesthetic can be fully established, from furnishings to product to smells and sounds, is a dream I’ve held for so long. My favorite shops are those that sell me a vision for how my life could look. That immersive type of space is what I aim for.
I envision a dark and cozy space that smells earthy and inviting. Heavy dark ambient tunes, chairs to sit in (and also buy) among houseplants and framed artwork, both antique and modern. Racks of clothing arranged in a monochrome from black to white to gray, all very modern but dark and avant-garde, both second hand and new collections. Everywhere you look is something new to see, a treasure hunt of potential pieces you could take with you to bring a piece of the space home with you. This isn’t another witch shop. It’s not a goth shop and it’s not an oddities shop. It’s all of those things and more.
