Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit animal rescue set on 4 acres of land on the scenic East Coast in St John, Barbados. Founded in January 2020, we took over a non-functioning charity, its dilapidated property and the responsibility of its resident dogs and cats.
On a daily basis we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome. Our headcount changes daily but it's triple the number it was when we took over. We are always operating full beyond our actual capacity. The dire economic climate has further exacerbated what was already a crisis for the dogs and cats of Barbados. We go the extra mile to help as many animals as we can. Spay/neuter is at the forefront of our work, along with education.
You probably know that Barbados is a beautiful island and a renowned tourist destination. Sadly, there's another side to Barbados which is not so attractive; there is a lot of animal cruelty. In large pockets of Barbadian society, cats and dogs are not seen as sentient beings. There's an underlying lack of empathy and compassion. Dogs are tied up or kept in small boxes or cages, denied food and water and live their whole lives alone without a single kind word or touch. Females are repeatedly forced to become pregnant either by sheer neglect or in an effort to sell the puppies (which go on to experience the same sad fate).
Legislation is not enforced and there are no repercussions for animal cruelty.
The lucky ones make it to our shelter where they get the best quality of life, care and attention. But this does not come cheap. Our running costs average US$20,000 a month, US$240,000 a year.
It's been a challenging journey so far. We've worked through laborious startup processes, extensive and ongoing renovations, and all during the Covid Pandemic. We have no government support and no guaranteed funding. We survive day by day, thanks to our dedicated volunteers and ad hoc donations.
