OBD HEAD DOWN BUT NOT OUT!
Head of the Organization of Black Designers (OBD), Founder and Chairman David Rice, recently went down due to an unfortunate spill in his home which had him hospitalized for some time. As a result of the fall he suffered a minor brain bleed which required surgery (successfully), fortunately with no mental acuity at this point, along with a left shoulder and hip injury. Possible minor nerve damage has created sluggish movement of his left arm and foot. He has currently been relocated to a Dayton rehabilitation center.
For over twenty years David, via the Organization of Black Designers (OBD), has been instrumental in the promotion of Black design esthetics and Black designers globally from the young and emerging to veterans of the craft. A native of Ohio and second home Detroit where he attended the prestigious institution College for Creative Studies and was only the third Black student to emerged from their rigorous Industrial Design program. Detroit is also where he conceived the idea of the organization. After a noted design career in the Motor City he moved to DC to make an even greater impact with his company Designcom and it became the place where he officially made OBD a reality.
David has helped hundreds, perhaps thousands associatively, on their path to becoming designers. Many notably so. Across the country and the globe he has touched directly and through the organization and the DesigNation conferences.
David has taught at Parsons School of Design, and lectured at Illinois Institute of Technology, Art Center College of Design, Wharton School of Business, Pratt, North Carolina State, University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, University of the Arts and LSU. Within his career he has won a number of industry awards but his biggest asset is his heart and desire to help people, especially young upcoming designers and those who may not know yet that they are designers. To him, that is his greatest reward.
"The most difficult part of this ordeal is being away from our student scholarship mission and pushing the organization forward in this time of greater racial awareness and change." David wants to be able to get back to doing the good work at OBD as swiftly as possible. With your kindness and giving you can be instrumental in making that happen.
Here are the immediate ways in which you can assist:
1) Financial gift donation
(No gift amount too small)
2) Purchase an official OBD shirt
