On May 27th, 2020 around 8:30 p.m. a fire broke out in la Central de Abasto, the biggest market in Oaxaca. The fire spread rapidly as it devoured products such as baskets, huaraches and traditional clothing. For more than two hours, firefighters and merchants with buckets of water fought tirelessly against the fire, but the flames advanced towards the zona de comedores (dining area). Pleas were made for citizens and piperos (trucks with water hoses) to support the fire fighters. Merchants, firefighters, and citizens fought the flames until early morning. Unfortunately, many in our community lost everything last night.
What does it mean to start from zero? What does it mean to start from zero during a pandemic that has already had a devastating impact on the most vulnerable in our community? We have started this gofundme to support those affected by the fire in La Central de Abastos. We are working directly with vendors in the market whose stands, products, and livelihoods were engulfed in flames. 100% of donations will be allocated to these families, many of whom have been selling their goods in the market for generations.
