In the aftermath of the historic teacher strike in California’s Oakland Unified School District, many students and teachers feel disregarded and disrespected as important student programs were cut, contract negotiations were unfair, and the district now continues to refuse to treat teachers and students as priorities.
The crisis in Oakland goes beyond local teachers, students, and admin. The underfunding of California public schools is a systematic issue. It’s time to take this fight to the state level.
The immediate goal of Oakland Students for Public Education (OSPE) is to organize a trip to the Capitol in Sacramento where students can express their support (or rejection) of certain bills in the California legislature which impact public education. The tentative date for this trip is APRIL 24. We are working to ensure that all students can receive free or low-cost transportation to the Capitol. The round-way trip per person is roughly $30, and we’d like to take as many students as possible (150+). Any amount contributed would be incredibly helpful and greatly appreciated. Please stand with Oakland students and help us achieve our goal!
