I was subbing for a school today when several of our special needs students left the bookfair feeling sad because their parents didn't send them money to get them any books. This school has some of our most underserved, at-risk youth.
"I don't have any money" one of the students cried as he was forced to put down the book he wanted in tears.
I wiped away my own tears looking at all the sad faces that wanted knowing they could not have.
I've also been that kid and it saddens me to know not everyone in certain school districts can afford to get what they want.
I told the para to let me know what the final tally was for that class after asking their parents (she took a list of what they wanted). She told me chances were slim the parents would cover it, so I'm asking you to help me help them. I'm a teacher on a bare minimum salary, and I'll still cover it myself BUT I was thinking, what if we could help some other kids who want to grab a book as well?
Anything helps the school AND puts a smile on a kid's face. Book fair is this week, let's see what we can do for them.
Every child deserves to be that kid able to bring something home for later.
Please find it in your heart to help and thank you in advance for helping bring joy to these kids faces.
