My name is Sally McAfee, and I am writing on behalf of my Gestalt (GTIP 2021) classmate, Gina Carfagno. Gina is a quiet but mighty warrior who calls herself an "ankle biter" because of her determination, persistent and ongoing courage. Professionally and personally she gives 110% of herself to clients and friends. She has just taken a new job as well as opened a private practice in Havertown, and because of her health issues, has just moved from Reading to the Havertown area by selling her dream house.
Gina has a very challenging and debilitating medical condition that the doctors have been working on, for many years, with only moderate success at best. Gina's GI tract is very compromised, and after 10+ major surgeries, tests, and expert medical opinions from doctors from Philadelphia and the Cleveland Clinic, her doctors are discouraged and told her "there is nothing more we can do for you other than manage your symptoms and keep your comfortable."
Global Dysmotility issues, such Gina has had for many years, are debilitating, painful, easily prone to infection and very difficult to resolve. Her digestive organs do not work well, and sometimes do not work at all, which leaves her prone to frequent hospital stays to control pain and symptoms.
At this time she needs very costly stomach treatments (Botox injections internally into the pylorus of the stomach) in an effort to get her stomach to break down food as it should, and hopefully allow Gina to regain some strength from nutrition. These injections are done via an endoscopy, so it is a 1-day procedure, which would be repeated every 3 months, if they work. Gina stopped these treatments in January 2018 as her insurance no longer covered them because they were not FDA approved, and the cost of $1100 for just those shots, was not something Gina could afford, and still can't.
