Our family has recently entered a very difficult season. After a series of serious challenges, we learned that our daughter needs specialized care out of state to support her health and well-being. Over the past several months, we have contacted dozens of programs across the country, and because of the complexity of her needs, only two programs were able to manage the level of care she requires — all of which are located out of state.

The program best suited for her is in Virginia, where she will be for the next several months to a year, receiving the intensive support she needs to heal and thrive. As parents, it is incredibly important to us to stay actively involved in her care. This means traveling regularly to Virginia to support our girl, attend appointments, and collaborate closely with her care team.

The reality is that traveling to Virginia is expensive. For reasons beyond our control, plane tickets to Virginia are unusually high, and on top of airfare, each trip will involve lodging, rental cars, and other related travel expenses. Over the coming year, we’ll be making many trips to support our daughter and ensure she’s receiving the best care possible.

We’re reaching out to our friends and family to ask for support. Every contribution will go directly toward airfare, lodging, transportation, and related travel costs, allowing us to be present for her during this critical time.

We never wanted to ask for help. But after traveling to Virginia for our daughter’s intake, it became clear that we need support more than ever. The cost of travel is far beyond our means, and despite punching numbers over and over again, the stress of trying to make it work has been consuming.

Whatever funds we do not use, we plan to donate to another family at the same facility who finds themselves in similar shoes. When we asked how often out-of-state families are able to visit, we were heartbroken to learn that many can’t — the financial burden simply makes it impossible. The thought of parents and siblings being separated for months, even years, because of travel costs is devastating.

Out of respect for our daughter’s privacy and because this is a large public platform, we are not disclosing her personal medical information here.
