At 8 years old, Ugbad Abdi was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, a disease that hinders the kidney’s ability to filter waste from the blood. During her last year of high school, in 2019, Ugbad’s health worsened which forced her to start the complicated processes of dialysis.

Now, at 21 years old, Ugbad will be receiving a kidney donation from her 19-year-old sister Asli Abdi. Asli found she was a match on July 14, 2022, after extensive testing at Mayo Clinic which included scans, blood work, and mental health evaluations.

Ugbad has been on dialysis for 3 years, while also being a full-time student at the College of Saint Benedict. Now Ugbad will be able to have a healthier senior year this fall. She will be getting her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, with a concentration in environmental chemistry.

Ugbad and Asli's mother, Mouna Kahin, is a single mom raising 5 children while working 2 separate jobs. With surgery coming up soon, Mouna will be missing a couple of months of work in order to be there for her daughters. The money donated will go towards medical bills, gas, lodging, food, rent, and any other expenses the family will be facing.
