Hello friends, family, and loved ones,
My name is Simone Nalls, a senior Africana Studies major at the San Francisco State University. I hope that during my time at this university and through the interactions I've had with many of you, that you understand my deep passion for culture, history, learning, and career goal of becoming a licensed Certified Mental Health Counseler.
As many of you may know, I have achieved the improbable and made history in Oakland -- offered admission into New York University class of 2019!
I could use your help making the improbable more possible and would greatly appreciate any donations so I can focus 100% on my studies. Though I have been granted student loans, there are still many expenses not yet covered for the next 2 years at NYU. Here are the major expenses we still need to cover:
-books
-school supply items (computer & good old fashioned notebooks and pens)
-travel between our home in California to New York, New York.
-extracurricular activities and clubs
-dormitory and survival items
-warm clothes (winter is NEAR)
-food off campus
In this endeavor, the combination of my intellectual pursuits, thirst for medical knowledge, along with my genuine concern for people can be satisfied in making a meaningful contribution to the health and welfare of underserved populations. I am considering pursuing a PhD, and enrolling in this master's program will enable me to hone my research and disciplinary interests. Additionally, I hope that my work impacts the lives of young people, teaching them to be critical scholars benefiting our communities through creating a more sustainable and just world for future generations.
**********More about me!!!********
My parents instilled in me the value of a strong work ethic and the responsibilities that one needs to incur to facilitate their dreams, goals, and motivations. As a result, when I have a goal to reach, I dedicate myself to achieving the task. This extends to my aspiration to be a physician. I feel that as an intellectually and emotionally capable individual, I have a calling to dedicate myself to helping others. My last six years of work in non-profit organizations introduced me to the limits and possibilities of institutionalized responses to poverty, violence and critical roles that culture plays in development, engagements and success of the response.
In addition to my experience and personal qualities, I have a solid educational foundation and a passion for youth and program development. I am currently involved in various community activities and am working for Eastside Cultural Center, an Oakland grassroots organization comprised of artists and organizers of color that own and operates an independent, sustainable cultural center. I have helped develop leadership in our youth by serving as an example of how education takes both dedication and integrity it takes to finish a goal to its fullest. Certain that my work with these students was important, I recognized that many progressive people who work with youth tend to focus on high school. I decided that interventions must also be made at the level where mainstream socialization is rooted.
While this is a great opportunity for me, there are still financial obligations aside from the costs of tuition that must be met before officially making the next step and registering for classes.
The reason for this GoFundMe account is to help with a portion of tuition fees due September 9th, 2017.
Since I will be moving across the country, finding a job will not be easy. As I plan and budget for this upcoming step in my educational pursuit, I will need to come up and estimated $8,000 (just a portion of the $27,000 needed for each semester) to cover the cost of tuition alone for my first semester of Graduate School.
Studying towards this degree is something I enjoy and that is not just for myself, but for OTHERS. The value of this degree will be fruitful for both adolescents and adults, to help provide resources to underserved communities.
My family is very excited for this opportunity to be the first person to earn a Masters degree, and always provided support emotionally, physically, and mentally,
but at this time they are unable to be a financial resource to fall back on.
By making a donation towards this goal you are really helping me make this dream into a reality.
Degrees: Associates of Arts in Social & Behavioral Sciences, Bachelor's Degrees of Arts in Africana Studies
Where I've served:
- Administrative Assistant, Facilitator, Audio Tech at Eastside Cultural Center
- Performing Artist with NAKA Dance Theater
- Literacy Intervention Tutor at Reading Partners
- Chaperone of the Girl Project (Spring & Summer 2015, 2016 and 2017)
