Memorial Wheelchair Fund for Manuel B. Estacio Jr.
Donation protected
My dad was diagnosed with Waldenstrom's Macroglobulnemia in 1992. It is a rare lymphoma and he was the youngest person ever diagnosed with the disease then at age 46. His main form of treatment was red blood cell transfusions. Every week for the past few years, my dad would go to NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center Infusion Center for this.
Since his major hospitalization in August, he was unable to walk anymore without assistance and there were times when my Mom and Dad would arrive or leave Perlmutter Cancer Center and they could not find any wheelchair in the lobby or the available wheelchairs where broken or didn't have any leg supports.
Once on the 18th Floor Infusion Center, sometimes the blood would take awhile to be transferred from the main hospital. Since he had cold agglutinin disease, the donated blood needed to be warmed before transfusion. Sometimes the blood bank would not send a blood warmer or other times they would need to borrow it. This would delay his transfusion and sometimes he would only be able to get only half his treatment and have to come back the next day to finish.
In lieu of flowers, my Mom would like to be able to purchase a wheelchair and a blood warmer specifically for the NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center 18th floor Infusion Center in memory of my dad. And please also donate blood through your local blood drive or blood donation center in memory of Manuel B. Estacio, Jr. Your blood donation saves lives. Thank you to all my dad's blood brothers and sisters...Transfusions have kept him alive since he was diagnosed in 1992.
