Hi!
Firstly, a HUGE thank you for visiting this page, as some of you know I’m planning to take on the NYC marathon on November 6th (my first ever 26.2!)
The stories to run marathons, or at times to achieve anything of personal significance in our lives are so often inspired by causes close to the heart. One of my biggest inspirations stems from the bravery, strength and personality shown by Shay, a family member who sadly lost his life at the young age of 13 in a fight against Glioblastoma multiforme (a type of brain cancer).
The immense courage shown by his parents — Deenu, Nikki and their whole family, has been nothing short of profound, and to build on his legacy, they created the charity ‘Shay’s smiles,’ whose name was inspired directly by Shay himself since he LOVED to focus on making those around him laugh and smile more than anything else in the world - even during some of his most unwell times.
His family have devoted the charity’s time and efforts to continue to raise awareness of this type of cancer, specifically by directing additional funding towards research into this type of disease (including the full funding of a 4-year Ph.D. student to focus their studies in this area), funding experimental treatments and providing care and support to families who are dealing with their loved ones who may have been recently diagnosed.
Any donation to the cause would be immensely appreciated and will help the world continue to make strides in providing support and developing cures one step at a time.
