Survivors in Solidarity - Supporting Vulnerable Genocide Survivors and Their Families
Help us support vulnerable survivor families most affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic during the period of genocide commemoration in Rwanda.
Over a million people were killed during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. In April 2021 Rwandans are marking the second genocide commemoration period since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. We remember those lost 27 years ago. Kept apart, we stand together for Kwibuka 27.
Survivors find this time of the year hard. It is even harder for survivors struggling with economic impacts of necessary public health restrictions introduced to control the spread of COVID-19. Many lost most or all of their family members in 1994 and even today they may have limited family support structures.
Having lived through genocide, survivors also have a great deal to share in terms of resilience and experience bringing communities together when faced with trauma, isolation and loss. But to lead they need your help.
Our campaign so far
In April 2020 we launched a campaign with IBUKA, the umbrella of the Genocide survivors’ associations in Rwanda to ask you to fund basic supplies for survivors and their dependents. These include young people who are carrying memories of the genocide for the next generation: the peace-builders of the future. So far, together with our international partners, the campaign has raised RWF 154,006,968 and reached 6,160 of the most vulnerable survivors and their families.
Whilst Rwanda has done well in limiting the spread of COVID-19 the increased needs of survivors due to public health restrictions have not gone away.
So this April, for Kwibuka 27, we're asking you again to support survivors most in need.
Just £25 is enough to provide food for a family of three for a month. £10,000 will provide food for 500 families or 1500 people for one month, we are hopeful that we’ll raise more, to sustain families for longer. Please stand in solidarity with survivors today.
Who are we?
The Ishami Foundation draws on genocide survivor experience to connect us all to our common humanity. We work in the UK and Rwanda to support survivors and young people in promoting equality and remembering genocide.
Ibuka is an independent Rwandan NGO created in 1995 to support survivors in remembering genocide, seeking justice and living well in the present. It has extensive networks within Rwanda and is coordinating distribution of money and supplies.
This campaign is part of a wider collaboration to support survivors with the coalition of Ibuka Associations in Europe, Genocide Survivors Foundation (US), Urukundo Organisation (Norway), Ibuka-Actions Urugemwe and friends and supporters from around the world.
