Nutzen statt Besitzen revisited – ein Buchprojekt

Im Jahr 1995 hat Michael Erlhoff bei Steidl das kleine programmatische und damals wegweisende Buch „Nutzen statt Besitzen“ veröffentlicht:

Aus dem Klappentext:

„Mietwagen anstelle von Blechlawinen und Parkplatznot oder Möbeltausch als Alternative zum Möbelkauf: In diesem Essay werden bestehende Modelle und zukünftige Möglichkeiten vorgestellt, aus ökonomischer, ökologischer und sozialer Vernunft den Besitz von Gegenständen durch deren gemeinsame Nutzung zu ersetzen. Gerade durch den Verzicht auf Besitz läßt sich der Lebensstandard verbessern. Denn – so der Autor – eigentlich sind Eigentümer immer wegen ihres Eigentums frustriert.“

Heute, 30 Jahre später, ist Einiges davon Wirklichkeit geworden, dennoch sind auch Dienstleistungen zuweilen immer noch recht frustrierend. Wir sollten deshalb den tollen Gedanken „Nutzen statt Besitzen“ weiterspinnen, den Möglichkeitshorizont noch einmal neu öffnen. Zum Beispiel:

- Kritisch, denn Sharing, etwa im Mobilitätsbereich kann viel produktintensiver, unökologischer und asozialer sein als Besitz.

- Altes neu bedenkend, denn Allmendekonzepte und Gemeinwohlansätze sind uralt und können sinnvoll wiederbelebt und weiterentwickelt werden.

- Mutig-spekulativ, im Sinne einer radikalen Produktvermeidung, etwa wenn materialintensive Bedürfnisbefriedigungen durch smarte virtuelle Alternativen ersetzt werden.

- U.v.a.m.

Dazu haben wir etwa 25 bekannte und noch nicht so bekannte, ältere und jüngere AutorInnen aus diversen Bereichen gewonnen (Katharina Bredies, Michelle Christensen, Peter Eckart, Meret Ernst, Köbi Gantenbein, Harald Gründl, Stephan Rammler, Erik Spiekermann, Peter Stephan, Kai Vöckler, u.v.a.). Der Verlag für „Nutzen statt Besitzen revisited“ steht bereits fest: Birkhäuser (https://birkhauser.com/de), Erscheinungstermin ist November 2025.

Und wer ist eigentlich „wir“?

Wir sind BIRD (Board of International Research in Design – https://www.bird-international-research-in-design.org/books-2-1), eine Gruppe, die nach spannenden Projekten Ausschau hält, die wir dem Birkhäuser Verlag zur Veröffentlichung vorschlagen.

Und warum dieser Aufruf?

Bücher, die nicht von vornherein als sichere Bestseller gelten, brauchen heute – wenn der Ladenpreis nicht unerschwinglich werden soll – einen Eigenbeitrag. In unserem Fall etwa 8.000.- Euro.

Alle, die uns mit ihren freundlichen Spenden helfen, dieses Projekt zu realisieren, werden wir (falls gewünscht) als Unterstützer*innen namentlich im Buch nennen. Alle, die eine Spende ab 75 Euro leisten, bekommen ein Exemplar zugesandt. Für beides bitten wir um eine persönliche Nachricht mit dem Spendenbetrag und dem gewünschten Namen für die Nennung im Buch, für die Buchsendung außerdem mit Angabe der Anschrift. Dafür bitte am besten die Kontaktoption unten auf der Seite nutzen (statt besitzen).

Sollte die Spende 300 Euro oder mehr betragen, laden wir die Betreffenden zusätzlich zum festlichen Dinner während unserer nächsten NERD-Konferenz in Berlin ein, auf der wir das Buch vorstellen werden. Auch hierzu bitten wir um eine separate Nachricht. Das genaue Datum der Konferenz, die voraussichtlich im November 2025 stattfinden wird, werden wir in Kürze bekannt geben.

And who actually is "we"?

We are BIRD (Board of International Research in Design - https://www.bird-international-research-in-design.org/books-2-1), a group that looks for exciting projects that we suggest to Birkhäuser Verlag for publication.

And why this call?

Books that are not considered to be sure bestsellers from the outset need a personal contribution today - if the retail price is not to become unaffordable. In our case, around 8,000 euros.

We will name everyone who helps us realize this project with their kind donations as supporters in the book (if desired). Everyone who makes a donation of 75 euros or more will receive a copy. For both, we ask that you send us a personal message with the donation amount and the name you want to be mentioned in the book, and also your address for the book to be sent.
